TILE GUIDE
Available in a wide array of styles, tile remains a classic choice for both commercial and residential interiors. At Oshawa Carpet One Floor & Home in Oshawa, we offer an extensive inventory of quality tile for flooring, walls, backsplashes, custom showers, bath surrounds, and more. Are you considering tile for your next project? Here’s what you need to know.
The three most popular types of tile are ceramic, porcelain, and stone.
Ceramic tile is made out of natural clay, which is kiln-fired and often glazed. Ceramic works wonderfully for both flooring and walls because it is light and versatile.
Porcelain tile is crafted in a process similar to ceramic, but it is kiln-fired at a hotter temperature to create a stronger product. Because of this, many home and business owners prefer porcelain tile for flooring in high traffic spaces and even for outdoor use in some cases.
Stone tile is derived from natural rocks slabs, such as granite and marble. A truly organic option, stone tiles are all unique, with their own colouring, veining, and textures. Stone is a stately choice for your indoor and outdoor spaces, especially foyers, hallways, mudrooms, kitchens, and more.
The flooring in your kitchen, entryway, bathroom, or mudroom will, most likely, be subjected to plenty of hard use over its lifetime. Tile flooring is a wonderful option for such spaces, since it’s water-repellent and durable. A true floor for the ages, tile has graced the inside and outside of residences and gathering spots for centuries: a testament to its staying power and timeless style appeal. When properly installed, tile flooring can last for decades – just one of the reasons it’s considered a green flooring solution. We offer tile installation services that will leave you with a lasting floor that looks and performs beautifully.
Wood look tile flooring is not a new tile product, but it has seen an increase in popularity over the years. Due to advances in digital technology, wood look tile can replicate the authentic look and feel of a real hardwood plank. Now, tile may not be able to add the same warmth as hardwood flooring, but it comes with other benefits. Wood look tile flooring is not sensitive to moisture or heat, so you can install it anywhere in your home where you usually could not install hardwood.
A favourite of the ancients, tile is a tried and true method of keeping floors and walls intact in the most tropical of climates. Today, tile remains a popular method of transforming your residence, with its one-of-a-kind textures and visuals made to withstand water and moisture. In fact, there are currently thousands of tile varieties to choose from so you're sure to find a good match for your space.

Tile FAQWhat type of floor tile is not slippery?Slip-resistance varies depending on the type of tile that you are looking at. We never want you to have to worry about slipping and falling on your beautiful floors, so please don’t hesitate to ask about the specifics of the tile you are looking at. Our experts can help you choose an option that has a slip rating that is best for the space that you are looking to install tile in. What is backsplash?Backsplash tiling covers the wall space behind vanities and countertops to protect from splashes. Ceramic is a great option for backsplashes due to its lightweight construction, easy to maintain durability, and various options when it comes to sizing, shape, and colour. Glass tile also makes a beautiful backslash, and it reflects light, making your space look larger and brighter. Stone tile is a third option to consider, but make sure you pay close attention to the overall mood the stone gives off. You wouldn’t want a darker stone to make your kitchen too dark. |
Tile is pretty pricey when it comes to the manufacturing process alone, but combine that with the added prep work and installation steps that are required, and the cost can add up quickly. If tile is the ideal flooring for your space, we promise the price will be well worth investing in a proper installation. Afterall, tile flooring is really only as strong as the underlayment and how it is installed. Even the toughest of tiles can crack under pressure when installed poorly.
Whether or not a tile is approved for heated floors depends on the material itself. In general, most floor tiles we sell are okay to go over heated flooring systems, but our team will be able to tell you more when looking at products.
