How to Care for Carpet

Taking good care of your new carpet will extend its lifespan, keep it from fading, matting, and staining, and make your home more healthy. It’s also important to follow the maintenance requirements of your carpet warranty to keep it valid. At Chilliwack Carpet One in Chilliwack, BC, we want to give you all the advice and tips you need to make the most of your new flooring. We love carpet for its soft, cozy feel and classic style. While there will be times when you need professional repairs or services for your carpet, usually the best carpet cleaner is you! Here are a few important things to remember when it comes to keeping your carpet fresh and beautiful.

Refer to Your Manufacturer’s Instructions

Especially with today’s carpet technology, it’s essential to follow your carpet manufacturer’s care instructions in order to keep from voiding your warranty. For example, many carpets now have proprietary stain treatments that lock out spills and blemishes. Certain cleaning products can degrade that stain protection or cause other problems. Likewise, some carpet weaves and fibres should also only be cleaned with specific vacuums to avoid wrecking the texture and appearance of your floor. Carpet warranties usually require a deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months or so, which will leave you with a fresh, beautiful floor.

How to Spot Clean and Vacuum Your Carpet

Usually carpets in high traffic areas need to be vacuumed once a week at least. This helps pull loose dirt, debris, and pet fur up from the fibres so that your floor stays fresh, clean, and soft. Doing so will also keep your carpet from trapping allergens, so your indoor air quality will improve. When it comes to wiping up a spill, you should always avoid scrubbing your carpet. Instead, gently blot at the mess with a damp paper towel or sponge, so as not to rub the stain deeper into the carpet fibres. Many of our carpet collections have a protective barrier that blocks blemishes and odours, but you should always clean up accidents as soon as possible to get the best results.

For When It’s Humid

Humidity and damp weather can cause a carpet to ripple or buckle. But, the ripples will usually disappear when the weather dries up, so just keep an eye on the progress. Another cause of buckling could be improper stretching when your carpet was installed, and if that’s the case, you will need to have your carpet re-stretched. If you’re in the process of buying a carpet, you can ask us about our carpet installation services in order to get quality work done that will leave you with a long-lasting floor.

For When It’s Busy

Heavy foot traffic or the weight of furniture can all contribute to carpet matting. While every carpet will crush to a certain degree, you can alleviate this with some small fixes. Place cups or furniture glides under the legs of your furniture when moving the furniture around. Also, moving the furniture will give heavy traffic areas a break and minimize the crushing. You can always use an area rug in busy spaces too – they’re not just for hard surface floors. Lastly, regular vacuuming will go a long way in keeping your carpet resilient.

For When It’s Sunny

Direct sunlight and flooring are definitely not best friends. Direct sunlight can cause a carpet’s colour to fade, and once a carpet loses its colour, there is no way to revive it. The best thing to do in order to prevent fading is to limit your floor’s exposure to the sun. You can do this by installing window treatments such as blinds or curtains, and then leaving them closed when you are not using the room. This will protect carpet from ultraviolet light and ensure a fade-free carpet!
